Route : Inverness - Aberdeen |
to Map |
The closest town to Inverness on the line to Aberdeen is Nairn. Nairn is a seaside resort with a harbour that provides shelter for pleasure boats and some inshore fishing boats. The seaside links have an extensive caravan park and other recreational facilities. The golf course achieved world wide publicity from the Walker Cup Championship held there in 1999.
The High Street has a wide range of shops that service the needs of local people and tourists alike.
After Nairn, the line heads East towards Aberdeen over 100 miles away through the arable farm lands of the Moray Coast. These farms provide much of the grain needed by the Speyside Malt Whisky distillers. Take a tour of the distilleries and see some of the greatest names in Scottish Malt Whisky being made in traditional copper stills and the product being stored away for up to 25 years in oak barrels.
Stop at Forres for the major air base at Kinloss. Elgin is the service centre to the Moray farmlands. The town also is a principal shopping and administrative centre and is approximately mid way between Inverness and Aberdeen.
Moray is the limit of the Highland Rail Partnership direct activity. However, the it has established close links with those in the Aberdeen and the surrounding area that are also working on developing the railway network in and to that area.
